Estudi\u00f3 en el colegio de los jesuitas en C\u00e1diz y aprendi\u00f3 ingl\u00e9s, franc\u00e9s, alem\u00e1n e italiano en sus frecuentes viajes por Europa&#8230; Pas\u00f3 parte de los a\u00f1os 1773-1774 en Salamanca, donde conoci\u00f3 a Juan Mel\u00e9ndez Vald\u00e9s. En ese lapso escribi\u00f3 sus mejores libros, <em>Cartas marruecas<\/em>\u00a0(1793) y <em>Noches l\u00fagubres<\/em> (1798), que aparecieron por entregas en el <em>Correo de Madrid<\/em>\u00a0(1789-1790). Fue ascendido a coronel en 1782 y quince d\u00edas despu\u00e9s muri\u00f3 en el sitio de Gibraltar.
